A Mixed Bag of Fish Is on Tap for This Weekend
What you see on the table here is what you can expect this weekend. With the arrival of the bonita schools you will see kingfish, wahoo, blackfin tuna and an occasional sailfish. You will not have to go far to catch any of them. The best of the fishing this week was inside of 250 feet of water. Be sure to turn on your bottom machine to mark the schools of bonito. The best speed for trolling right now is at around 8 knots. If you are fishing live bait, I would suggest setting up a bit deeper around 350 feet of water and drifting west up on to shallower ground around 100 feet. Repeat the process a few times and you should have no problem bending the rod.
Farther offshore the swordfish bite has been excellent! Gene Stoller out of Lighthouse Point caught a big swordfish pushing 400 pounds earlier this week. Several other fish over 300lbs were boated as well. The best of the swordfish bite was in around 1700 feet of water.
The mahi bite was scattered about this week. We had several reports of fish schools in around 600 feet of water but most of the big fish came outside of 15 miles. Floating debris from hurricane Beryl should be making its way to our area very soon. As you travel offshore keep your eyes peeled for anything floating either on or just underneath the surface. We suggest throwing a floatable object to mark the location of the floating debris. Once you have caught your mahi-mahi you can then retrieve your floating object. We use a pool noodle with a lead at the bottom aboard the "Lisa B". Lastly, remember the summertime storms. Always let somebody know what time you will be returning to shore.
