Pictured here is a beautiful swordfish caught by Mike and Andre a few days back. This fish was caught on a mahi belly in 1650 feet of water. Most of the fleet experienced 1 or maybe 2 bites per day which is generally a bit low for this time of the year. On the other hand, those who caught fish were ecstatic because the fish were on the large side. The fish here is over 300 pounds which will feed a lot of people. We had a report of a local fisherman catching a fish over 400 pounds that was a pumpkin swordfish. Pumpkin Swordfish has meat that is bright orange like a pumpkin and is a delicacy. Pumpkin swordfish meat is extremely oily and has high fat content which makes it excellent tasting. The orange in the meat is caused by the swordfish diet of deep-water ruby red shrimp. When we catch one of these pumpkin swordfish, we usually see the bright red shrimp in their stomach.
Farther near shore the weehoo bite has been excellent! Yes, I said weehoo not wahoo because all of the fish we were catching this week were under 12 pounds. It is actually a really good sign to see some small fish like this. Most wahoo under 10 pounds are no more than six months old. Wahoo grow to 48 inches in the first year of their life.
Most other local fishing this week was tough. A few sailfish on live bait and some snappers on the bottom were reported.

The Bahama wahoo bite this week was very good so if you have time to travel over to Bimini or Freeport that may be a good option. Both locations had reports of 4+ fish days with the largest being 78 pounds.
