June and July is when we see the big schools of bonito move in to the area. This is a great sign for a number of reasons. Bonito is by far our number one selling bait at RJ Boyle Studio. People buy thousands of prepared bait strips from the bonito. In this two month span we have to capitalize on cutting, salting and prepping these baits for the whole year. A wonderful byproduct of the bonito arrival is large sized wahoo. Wahoo love to feed on bonito so if it is your dream to catch a large wahoo now would be the time. Pictured here is a trip from earlier this week aboard the "Lisa B" with wahoo up to 62 pounds. Being one of the fastest fish in the ocean the wahoo put up an extremely great fight and are wonderful to eat. The best of the wahoo bite this week was in 300 feet of water. You can catch wahoo with live bait or dead bait but the best tactic this week was definitely on the troll. We troll planers at around 9 knots and travel between 150 and 350 feet of water. Pay attention to your bottom machine as you should mark the schools of bonito. 

 

Father offshore the swordfish bite was excellent this week as several boats put up catches weighing in at over 400 pounds. Chris Huff and Goodtime Charlie caught three swords in one day this week including the big one pictured here. The best of the bite for swordfish was on rigged squid tentacles and the depth was around 1700 feet of water. Please be careful when running offshore as the afternoon storms can get pretty intense as they move offshore in the afternoon.
