Get your arms ready to crank on bonito!
Pictured here as a trip aboard the "Lisa B" earlier this week. All of our trips this week ended up with loads of bonito. At times during the week, we actually fished fewer top rods to stay away from the bonito. We are trying to target a wahoo so we would fish the planer rods as deep as we could. We still had bonito on the planers, but wahoo and kings seemed to be the bycatch. It is excruciatingly hot right now so I would not really suggest live bait fishing over the next few days unless you get a slight sea breeze.
We tried for swordfish early this week but struck out. Captain Mark aboard the "Highly Migratory" also struck out on swordfish but landed his limit of mahi-mahi up to 15 pounds. Yes, there are still some floating debris and branches well offshore in the gulf stream which are holding fish. This weekend might be a good time to run and gun for some mahi.
Over the last few trips offshore we started to notice the skipjack tuna at around 10 miles off. They are a dead giveaway as you will see lots of small black tuna birds either sitting on the water or milling around right near the surface. Many people think they are looking at mahi, but they are actually looking at skipjack tuna. To catch the tuna, we fish very small strip baits fished way back behind the boat in the clean water. If you catch the skipjack tuna, be sure to bleed it by cutting the gills while it is still alive. That will give you a really like pink meat which is excellent for sushi.
For an up to the minute fishing report tune in to Paul Castronovo and the Big 105.9 Papas Pilar fishing report Friday morning at 6:20 AM. You can also get set up with bait tackle and charters aboard the Lisa B by calling 954-420-5001.
Stay cool this weekend!
