Rough Seas Offshore Providing Big Catches of Pelagics!

Rough Seas Offshore Providing Big Catches of Pelagics!
4-to-5-foot seas is no joke and not at all fun when it comes to sportfishing. That being said during the month of October the seas are usually rough, but the fishing is excellent with catches consisting of what you see here. Most people are afraid to venture out but the truth of it is most of these pelagic species are close to shore within 2 miles so you don't have to go very far to get lucky. Trolling and moving can be difficult in rough seas but using live bait and kites can be the answer at times. On the roughest of days, we would simply put our bow into the wind on an easterly breeze and put out several life baits off of the kite. When you sit with your bow into the wind and waves it's not really that bad. You are simply bumping in and out of gear in the same spot. The movement that you get is usually north or south with the direction of the current. The best of the fishing this week was in 150 to 250 feet of water and most of the week we had dirty green water from the earlier rains. As of Friday, the water has cleaned up and the fishing should be excellent this weekend.

For the bigger boats out there, I will let you know that the swordfishing has been excellent all week. October is the perfect time to catch a big swordfish but make sure you stay safe offshore. The best of the bight this week was on the squid tentacle and the best depth was 1800 feet of water. Several fish in the 200 to 300 pound range were caught this week by local anglers.

I am writing this report as I sit in my booth at the Fort Lauderdale international boat show. We are showcasing RJ Boyle artwork at the Bahia Mar main tent location for the next five days Wednesday through Sunday. Stop by and see us.
