The Wahoo Bite Fires Off Early in the Week!

The Wahoo Bite Fires Off Early in the Week!

Pictured here is Mike D with a nice Wahoo from a few trips back. We were not anticipating a heavy wahoo bite this week, but the bite fired off with anglers catching multiple fish over 30 pounds. It is so interesting to follow the fishing trends from previous years. You really get a chance to notice catch fluctuation on a day-to-day basis. South Florida fishing can be the best in the world today and complete crap tomorrow. This is due to the gulf stream current. This week the gulf stream pushed relatively close to shore about 4 miles which brings pelagic fish in from the stream. On our way in from swordfishing on Monday we drove through several current and tidal edges that were substantial. These edges were holding mahi, billfish and wahoo. The average speed of the gulf streams this week is 3.6 knots which means that was swimming here today is gone tomorrow. It makes you feel good when you have a bad day of fishing knowing that the next day will probably be good. The mahi bite was consistent offshore with fish up to about 12 pounds. There were a lot of undersized fish so be sure to measure your couch.

For the guys that don't want to travel far offshore remember that the snook bite is excellent right now. The inlets, canals and beaches are filled with fish spawning. Don't be afraid to put a fresh dead bait on the bottom with a fluorocarbon leader. Most people prefer to fish live bait but at times chunk dead bait is actually better.
