This weekend is looking promising for catching a swordfish!

Pictured here is Chris Koulvaris with his charter aboard the "Mines Bigger" a few days back. The swordfish were snapping as they caught several fish on the swordfish grounds. This is a great sign as the bite has been extremely slow for several months. It looks like we finally got a migration of bait to stay in our area which will give us good fishing over the next few weeks. Historically the biggest fish we see start to arrive at the end of September and will last through January.
Most of the fleet now fish two rods for swordfish. One bait is fished on the tip rod about 100 feet off of the bottom and the buoy rod which floats behind the boat is usually positioned 200 to 300 feet off of the bottom. Some days the buoy will out fish the tip, but it is important to fish both rods to find and locate where the fish are biting. For years we only fished one rod off of the tip right next to the boat. Catches have increased since we added the second buoy rod.
The best bait right now for swordfish is the squid tentacle and the bonito strip. We carry both at the store so stop in to get set up before heading out.
This is also a great time to go nighttime swordfishing. If you get that right weather which consists of very little wind and no storms you should head out. Most people Swordfish in the daytime now but the night light is exciting and much more relaxing. To get a Swordfish update call the shop and we will fill you in.
Closer to shore the bite was mediocre this week. A few wahoo and kingfish were caught but overall fishing was slow. Snook fishing is still excellent as the mullet run along the beaches is starting to happen.
Mahi-mahi fishing has been hit or miss with a few anglers locating debris and putting fish in the boat. This could all change with the current by the weekend so check in on the fishing report at Big105.9 the Paul Castronovo Papas Pilar fishing report at 6:20 AM on Friday morning.
Get tight!
