Try your luck in the deep by fishing for gold!

Try your luck in the deep by fishing for gold!
Pictured here is Theresa Fichtelman with a beautiful golden tilefish. These fish live in mud holes at depths ranging between 750 to 1000 feet. This fish is not to be confused with its brother the grey tilefish. They are both excellent eating but the golden tile out classes the gray. One question we get from anglers is how we know where the mud is. On most people's depth finder, the mud will show as a different color than rock. Most rock and hard bottom will show as red or yellow and mud on most machines may show as green. You can really notice that you are in the mud because the lead will stick it into it and almost make it seem like you're hooked on bottom. One of the key ingredients to catching golden tile is to leave the bait in an area and not drag it across the bottom. Most of the time once we hit mud bottom, we will allow the rig to free spool out giving the tile enough time to find the bait. Just drifting along and moving too fast is not optimal for catching these beautiful fish. Fresh caught bait such as goggle eye or bonito is great for bait. Squid is also an excellent choice for tile. We use 3- 13/0 circle hooks on a chicken rig and an eight-pound lead as a rig. If you have any questions on rigging or areas to fish, call us at the shop.

Closer to shore the fishing has been extremely slow this week. The wahoo bite which we thought would be great around the full moon was terrible. A few fish were caught on the small side but overall, the bite was dismal. The barometer was truly erratic over the last week creating difficult fishing conditions. Changing of the wind direction, temperatures and barometer steadiness are to blame for the bad fishing. The good news is that at any moment fishing conditions can pick up for the better. We're hoping that this weekend will be just that, but we do have rough sea conditions. If you are going to venture out you must check the weather and let people know when you will be back to the dock.
