You gotta love flat calm sea conditions, especially for swordfish. We are on the backside of the moon right now meaning that the daytime swordfish bite should be picking up. This is a fish we caught last week aboard the "Lisa B" out of Port 32. This was Nico's first broadbill swordfish and we landed it on the first drop. This fish was caught in 1680 feet of water using a bonito taco. The gulf stream water on top was over 90°, which is really pushing as hot as it ever gets. Down near the bottom of the ocean the water is much colder. You can actually feel the temperature of the lead when it comes out of the water and it's extremely cold. The seaweed wasn't that bad which made it enjoyable. We will be fishing this weekend for swordfish and mahi-mahi well offshore.
Closer to the beach the fishing was pretty good around the full moon for wahoo. Several local charter captains caught 1 to 2 fish per trip and had a kingfish and a few bonito mixed in. Even with the hot temperatures, several anglers also caught and released several sailfish out in 200 feet of water.
Keep in mind that boats traveling to the Bahamas will be charged over $1000 now for entry. Between all of the fees and fishing licenses it has basically almost tripled since last summer. If you're going over for one to two days, it really makes a dent in your wallet. Those boats traveling for 30 days or so may be able to accept the increase in payment but give a call before you go to be clear on what you will pay for your size boat.
