The fish are still biting, even with all the crazy heat!

The fish are still biting, even with all the crazy heat!

I must say that I am pleasantly surprised to have seen all of the great catches this week locally. It is so darn hot that I truly believed we would have a lull in fishing. When the kids go back to school, we usually see fishing slow down. Obviously with everybody returning to school, not as many people are fishing, so the reports are much less. That being said, we had fantastic catches of wahoo, swordfish, and mahi-mahi this week. On the tail end of the storm that skirted our coast, offshore anglers were greeted with floating debris, which yielded great catches of mahi-mahi. The fish were on the bigger side, pushing 25 pounds which is large for our area.

We are getting lots of reports of guys fishing for blackbelly rose fish while making the track well offshore in pursuit of mahi. The great thing about rose fish is that they are fantastic eating and relatively easy to catch with most of the fish being caught between the depths of 700 and 900 feet. You can almost blind drop anywhere between Hillsboro and Port Everglades in those depths and catch fish. We use chicken rigs with cut squid for bait, and we add a water activated strobe light at the top of the rig.

Make sure you have a good fillet knife and a pair of gloves as the only downside to rosefish is filleting them as they are spiny. Some guys will actually use an electric knife, which works fantastic.
