Great Fishing is Here!

Great Fishing is Here!

This week of fishing has been awesome all the way around out of Hillsboro, Boca and Boynton inlets.  Miami Dolphins great John Offerdahl (Pictured here) and his boys fished with us early this week and put a hurting on the yellowtail snapper off of north Boca. We had perfect conditions which consists of a 1 knot north tide and light winds. We caught our limit in a six hour trip which added up to 60 fish for the trip.

The yellowtail snapper limit is 10 per person with a regulated size limit of 12 inches to the fork. The winter months are excellent for snapper fishing here off our coast and the best depth for yellowtail is around 70 feet of water. We caught these fish while at anchor and drifted back fresh small chunks of bonito to get the bites. We use a block of menhaden chum to attract the fish. One tip for you on the snapper is to get set up in your spot and chum for at least 20 minutes before actually fishing a bait. It is best to get these snappers up behind the boat so you can catch them quickly. If you fish quickly you will notice that you have to let out too much line behind the boat which and when hooking a fish at a long distance your fish then fall prey to sharks and other pelagic fish. Get those snappers up close so you don't have a shark issue.

The wahoo bite has also been off the chain. Our charter boat "Lisa B" caught 3 wahoo on one four hour trip with the average size weighing around 35 pounds. We caught these wahoo trolling planers with a sea witch and bonito strip combination. The depth of the wahoo bite was between 150 and 220 feet of water. We have several cold fronts lining up over the next few days which is great for wahoo fishing. These fish love an approaching front and the bite will be excellent 12 hours just prior to the front.

Mahi Mahi and sailfish have also been abundant. The mahi mahi fishing was best around 600 feet of water and the size of the fish averaged 10 pounds. If you are going to try the mahi fishing be sure to check the weather the morning of fishing. Westerly winds will kick up the seas offshore so pay attention to the weather.
