Record Numbers of Sailfish Caught Outside Hillsboro Inlet This Week!

Record Numbers of Sailfish Caught Outside Hillsboro Inlet This Week!
What you are looking at is a picture of 23 release sailfish flags hanging from the outrigger which represent each of the sails caught by the "Native Son" and Captain Art Sapp on a five-hour trip earlier this week. Catching one sailfish is a special event but once every few years we get this random crazy migration that flows through our spot right off the lighthouse. News of the epic bite traveled fast as boats and anglers fled to the ocean in pursuit of the sails. Some people struggled to find live bait which is the best for putting up numbers on sails. A live goggle eye bait sure is a prized possession when the sailfish bite is on. People were catching fish from 100 feet of water out to 250 feet of water with ease. As I am writing this the bite is still on and several boats have double digit numbers as we speak. There is a large tournament called the Sailfish Challenge starting Friday and ending Saturday. We sure are hoping the bite sticks around for a few days.

Mahi-mahi have been mixed in with the sailfish. Most of the fish caught nearshore have been in the 10-pound range which is perfect for table fare. The yellowtail and mutton snapper bite has been excellent and may prove to be the weekend winner. We will have northwest to north wind conditions so it might be difficult to run offshore. The snapper bite is best between 70 and 100 feet of water.
