Big Kings Coming Soon?

Big Kings Coming Soon?

Usually around this time of the year we start to see some really big kingfish at the dock. These kingfish feed anywhere from 20 feet of water out to 150 feet. They are usually mixed in with the spanish mackerel schools. There is nothing more fun than fighting a 50 pound king on light tackle. One of the techniques that I learned from some great local commercial fishermen was to catch a spanish mackerel and very quickly put him out for bait on a kite or free line behind the boat.

If the smoker (Big) kings were around it would usually only take a minute before the bait would be eaten. To catch the spanish mackerel for bait we would troll around the schools of mackerel with a Gotcha lure or a Clark spoon. Hopefully these mackerel will make it south to us. We need on more big cold front to help push that school of fish down to our area. Cross your fingers!!
One of the local charter captains Art Sapp (pictured here) specializes in catching big kings as well as anything that swims. You can charter him and he will guide you in the right direction and put you on the big ones.
