Bottom Fishing is Heating Up on the Reef

Bottom Fishing is Heating Up on the Reef

Pictured here is Ben and Dan Seffer with a beautiful mutton snapper caught aboard the "Memory Maker" earlier this week. Captain John Henry sure put us on the fish as rods were bent all morning. Now is a great time to bottom fish anywhere from the Florida Keys to Pompano Beach. We use a sliding egg lead above a 50-foot fluorocarbon leader tipped with a 5/0 circle hook and baited with a plug of ballyhoo or a live pinfish. We should see consistent snapper fishing continue throughout the summer. The best of the snapper bite has been from 75-125 feet of water.

As for pelagics we had several nice wahoo caught throughout the week. We have confirmation of at least three fish over 70 pounds being boated. Vic Grande out of Lighthouse Point caught this 89-pounder trolling a horse ballyhoo in 175 feet of water. We are seeing a lot of juvenile blackfin tuna and big wahoo have moved in as they love to eat these tuna.

The swordfish bite remained slow again this week, but we anticipate the fishing picking up on the swordfish grounds next week!
