Great Fishing Near Shore!

Great Fishing Near Shore!

As we get into the winter months we start to see some really good fishing on the reef. What that means is you don’t have to go very far to catch real quality fish like you see in this picture. Everything in this picture was caught less than a mile and a half off the beach and in no deeper than 250 feet of water.
Wahoo, kingfish, tuna, mahi mahi and bonito kept these boys busy on a charter earlier this week.

During the winter we definitely get less fishable days but those rough seas conditions really improve fishing near shore as quality fish then are blown into the shallows. Everything in this picture was caught trolling on either a Ballyhoo or Bonita strip at a speed of 6-8 knots.

The guys who were live bait fishing experienced more sailfish catches but less meat fish like these this week. With the cold front pushing through this week we should start to see much better billfish action. As for bottom fishing the bite is still red hot and the yellowtail snapper fishing is still really good. Farther offshore the swordfishing is hit or miss. There were a few fish boated but quite a few boats got skunked. Looking at the logbook we expect the sword fishing to really pick up over the next several weeks. Some of the biggest fish landed locally have been caught in December and January.

The Trashcan Slam tournament targeting sailfish is scheduled for Saturday. Check them out on Instagram and Facebook for all the details.
