Meat Fish Season Has Arrived Off South Florida

Meat Fish Season Has Arrived Off South Florida

RJ will be giving a free seminar on mahi fishing at Bass Pro shop on Saturday in Dania from 12-2:30.

Over a two day span we have caught quite a few species of fish locally aboard the "Lisa B" out of Lighthouse Point. This is a great sign as we kick off meat fish season. During this time, we see an influx of blackfin tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo and kingfish and the beauty is that you never really know what you are going to catch. Yes, we do have slow days when the bite is just not very good but for the most part you have a chance at catching a trophy fish. Mixed into the catches are some smaller bonito which is the center point of all of these catches. These pelagic fish are feeding on the bonito schools. You can catch all of these quality fish by either drifting live bait and or trolling.

If you are looking to target kingfish, I would stay inside of 150 feet of water and slow your troll or drift. Trolling for kingfish is optimum at around 5 knots and using planers is definitely the go to. If you are targeting mahi-mahi and blackfin tuna you are going to stay on the deeper side of the ledge. Troll between 200 and 350 feet of water at a speed of 8-9 knots. We should have a southeast wind throughout the weekend giving us some pretty darn good fishing weather.

To get set up with a charter aboard the Lisa B or for an up-to-date fishing report call us at the store 954-420-5001.

Tune in to 105.9 the Paul Castronovo show and the Papas Pilar fishing report on Friday morning at 6:25 AM.

Get tight!
