When the Barometer Is Right the Fish Will Bite!

When the Barometer Is Right the Fish Will Bite!
Last weekend we fished a tournament out of Bimini with 40 of the best boats when it comes to wahoo fishing. Boats were allowed to leave, and the range was 100 miles from port. Boats ran in all directions looking for a bite. The problem was that the barometer was dropping and when this happens the bite will shut off for most pelagic fish. Pelagic fish include sailfish, marlin, tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi. There were only a few small fish caught by the whole fleet and most boats got skunked without even a bite. It is so important to understand the barometer and how it affects fishing off our coast. When we have an approaching storm, we can see a good bite up until the barometer starts to drop out. Once that barometer starts to drop it usually shuts off and fishing will not be good again until the barometer is rising and or stable.
This weekend we are probably going to have somewhat choppy seas so be prepared if you're going to venture out. The bite should be really good after this blow. We should see wahoo and mahi-mahi in shallow water around 200 feet. The sailfish bite will be good, and the snapper bite should be excellent. Please be careful out there if you do venture out and don't be afraid to let somebody know what time you will be home.
